Rainier Beach Neighborhood Neighbors:

Mt. Baker Housing has acquired and is redeveloping approximately 3.3 acres of land southeast of the Rainier Beach Light Rail Station located at 9236 Renton Ave S. This purchase included the former Thunderbird Treatment Center, an inpatient substance use disorder treatment center previously owned by the Seattle Indian Health Board. We are currently calling the project “Thunderbird” while we are in the early phases of planning.

This project will include several low-rise buildings situated in a garden style family housing community of approximately 233 units. The community will serve people earning 60% of the Area Median Income, which currently equates to $71,640 for a family of four in Seattle. Current plans for the project call for a combination of studios, 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom, 3-bedroom, and 4-bedroom units, with roughly 50% of the units being family size. The project will not include commercial space but will include a central building with a community room, ample parking, and outdoor play space for residents. The acquisition of the project is in part funded by acquisition funds provided by the City of Seattle, Office of Housing. Mt Baker Housing remains committed to providing affordable housing as well as healthy environmental living spaces in southeast Seattle. We welcome and appreciate neighborhood input and engagement. Mt. Baker Housing is thankful to have another opportunity to bring more affordable housing to our Southeast Seattle neighbors.
