Trenton English

Mt. Baker Housing Association (MBH) purchased a 53,000 SF site in 2021, at 4215 S. Trenton Street, across from the Rainier Beach Light rail Station. We have begun to design the site in partnership with the Tubman Center for Health and Freedom to deliver an affordable multi-family apartment building next to a community health center.

MBH will construct a 170+ unit apartment building with at least 281 bedrooms, designated to households earning 50% and 60% of Area Median Income and below. MBH is prioritizing the needs of large multi-generational families in its designs by making 40% of the units with two- and three- bedrooms and designing onsite accessible indoor and outdoor amenities, open to all residents. The design includes underground parking with the goal of accommodating the transportation needs of the larger households. MBH is enthusiastic about the opportunity to connect residents and neighbors with healthcare providers and wellness programming offered through the Tubman Center.

To make room for the health center, MBH will construct a 12-story apartment building on the portion of the site zoned for 125’ height. The Tubman Center will purchase a portion of the west side of the site, zoned for 55’, with plans to construct a freestanding three-story Black community-owned-and-led health care services and job training center, with underground parking. Construction of the Tubman Center is anticipated to begin in 2024 and will be funded and operated separately from the apartment building. MBH aims to secure funding to begin construction of the apartments in 2025.
